“This short essay was born from the tragic circumstance of the war in Gaza and the fierce controversies that followed. The Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, was almost universally met with a necessary and understandable condemnation. The destructive and deadly frenzy unleashed by Israel in the following months, on the other hand, provoked much more ambiguous reactions, awkward distancing but always lenient and usually condescending.” […
“There is no doubt that in the future, Gaza will find its historians. For now, we can only reflect on the public uses of the past that accompany it, on the help that history can offer when examining the present and the often debatable and sometimes despicable instrumentalizations it undergoes. This is what my small essay addresses. My perspective diverges from the consensus of the 'chorus', in the sense that it does not align with the axioms of this small part of the world we call the West, which claims to hold the monopoly not only of power but also of morality. In the face of this consensual chorus, my text seeks to be a 'counterpoint', to accept the invitation that Edward Said made to intellectuals years ago, lamenting that their voices were becoming increasingly unheard, drowned out by the media buzz. However, if we attempted to change our point of observation and come to the position of those suffering this war, the voices outside the chorus express very obvious truths.”
“The stakes today are not the existence of Israel but the survival of the Palestinian people. If the war in Gaza results in a second Nakba, the legitimacy of Israel will be definitively jeopardized. In this case, neither American weapons, nor Western media, nor the German state logic, nor the distorted and debased memory of the Holocaust will be able to redeem it.”
