Eliot Rosewater, a veteran of World War II, alcoholic, and volunteer firefighter, finds himself the president of the Rosewater Foundation, an institution with an immense fortune, acquired in a rather shady manner, thanks to an inheritance. Eliot is tormented because he doesn’t believe he deserves such a thing.
As he "unfortunately" develops a social conscience, he embarks on a literally drunken journey across America with the intention of helping those in need, collapsing mentally and physically more and more at each stop. Until his path intersects with that of science fiction writer Kilgore Trout. With his help, he will attempt a noble experiment with human nature.
The result? The funniest satire by Kurt Vonnegut, a brilliant depiction of the greed, hypocrisy, and foolishness of all people. God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater is an extremely incisive satire about a famous family (its joys, sorrows, and obsessions) and, perhaps most importantly, about the collective madness of a nation.
