"Atkins' Physical Chemistry" is perhaps the most internationally acclaimed undergraduate textbook in its field. The author team continually strives to refresh the book's content, following the progress of science, by incorporating many modern applications of physical chemistry principles.
The new translation into Greek (from the 9th English edition) aligns with this effort, in this concise, full-color edition. The range of material covered in the book is extensive. In the first part, the concepts of Thermodynamics and their applications are presented, phase transitions and chemical equilibrium are studied, and Electrochemistry is addressed.
In the second and larger part, the principles and basic concepts of Quantum Mechanics are developed, which are then applied to study the structure of atoms and molecules. This knowledge, along with the study of molecular symmetry, is combined to interpret atomic and molecular spectra in three chapters dedicated to spectroscopy. The presentation of Statistical Thermodynamics connects the second part with the thermodynamic concepts developed in the first. Finally, the properties of macromolecules and solids are examined.
The third part discusses the kinetic theory of gases and studies transport phenomena. Then, the reaction rate is defined, and an extensive study of the mechanisms and dynamics of both simple and complex chemical reactions is conducted, while the last chapter explains the action of catalysts. The authors have placed significant emphasis on improving how the structure of the book itself aids in studying its contents.
At the beginning of each section, there is a summary of the main points covered, and at the end of each chapter, a summary of the main equations. Where necessary, a mathematical supplement has been added at the end of the chapter, presenting the key mathematical concepts needed for a complete understanding of the corresponding material. Numerous advisory comments have been added throughout the text, as well as many brief examples that apply the formulas.
The presentation of concepts continues to be made in a straightforward way, without neglecting scientific rigor where it is necessary. The numerous examples, solved exercises, and the rich collection of unsolved exercises and problems contribute to this direction. Many of the unsolved problems added draw data from results of real experiments published in scientific journals, thus giving the reader the opportunity to perceive the direct relationship that theory has with experiment in science.
Finally, the authors have attempted to highlight the interdisciplinary nature of physical chemistry by adding sections that demonstrate its impact on other sciences, such as biology, environmental science, materials science, etc.
