"The Frogs" premiered at the Lenaea in 405 BC and won the first prize. It is a "literary comedy," as its main theme revolves around the works of Aeschylus and Euripides. However, there are also political undertones. With "The Frogs," Aristophanes seems to want to settle scores with Euripides. This innovator, the poet-philosopher who sought genuine renewal and proposed a new social organization that could restore and save Athenian culture. For Aristophanes, however, the solution was a return to the theocratic and grand era of Aeschylus, to the "correct and proper" that flowed from the works of the older of the three great tragedians.
