Theological spirit, ascetic spirit, social spirit, administrative spirit, philosophical spirit, steady spirit, flexible spirit, spirit of sacrifice, and finally ecclesiastical spirit was Saint Basil the Great.
His presence was one of the happiest and brightest moments in the history of the Church, though this does not mean that the holy man was praised by all in his time. On the contrary, he was slandered, accused of heresy, and suffered greatly, while at the same time enjoying the rare privilege of being called Great while he was still alive.
The Church and the University spirit met in the person of Basil, for this holy man was at once a preeminent bearer of the truth of Christ and a glorious representative of Hellenic Education.
These two spiritual entities, truth and Hellenic education, although each of a different nature, acted with such authenticity in the heart of Basil that he created a high, timeless, multi-faceted work, a work recognized by all, a work that elevated its creator to Universal Teacher.
