Description

Once upon a time, there was an Apple Tree that loved a little boy very much. This is how one of the most classic illustrated stories, written by Shel Silverstein, begins. The Giving Tree refers to the relationship between a tree and a child throughout their lives. When the child is small, he visits the tree every day, swings on its branches, and rests in its shade. As he grows older, he asks for more and more from it while spending less and less time with it. Every day the boy would visit her, gather her apples, climb her trunk, and swing on her branches. And the Tree was happy. The interpretations behind the book include the symbolic value of selfless friendship, the parental love offered unconditionally, and the relationship of humans with the environment. This classic book touches both young and old, composing a hymn to selflessness and a tender allegory about life and human maturity.

  • Theme: Selfless love, Offering, Human-nature relationship, The cycles of life, Loss, Gratitude, Giving, Generosity
  • Style: Allegorical, simple, deeply moving, poetic, philosophical, timeless, and minimalist.
  • Age: For all ages

Suitable for:

For young and adult readers who appreciate stories with deep meanings, which provoke thought and touch the heart. It is ideal for starting meaningful conversations about love in all its forms, unconditional giving, gratitude (or the absence of it), and our often complex relationship with nature and those around us. It is a precious gift that moves, provokes thought, and remains unforgettable for every generation of readers.

Why This Book Is Special:

  • It is an undisputed masterpiece of global children's (and not only) literature, written and illustrated by the unique and multi-talented Shel Silverstein.
  • With disarming simplicity and austerity, both in the text and in the characteristic black-and-white, linear illustration, it manages to touch the most sensitive chords of human existence and convey powerful messages.
  • The story of the tree's selfless love for the boy is a strong and multi-layered allegory that allows for many interpretations and connects with the personal experience of each reader.
  • It remains timelessly relevant and moving, speaking of fundamental values of life such as love, sacrifice, generosity, and the pursuit of happiness.
  • This anniversary edition honors a book that has been loved by millions of readers worldwide for over half a century and continues to inspire and teach.

Book with a hardcover and 64 pages, featuring the distinctive, simple yet so expressive black-and-white illustrations by Shel Silverstein, which are an integral part of the storytelling and the unique atmosphere of the book.

Suggestions for use by parents or educators:

  • Ideal for exploring with children (or even with adults in reading groups) concepts such as selflessness, generosity, gratitude (or the absence of it), human needs, and the consequences of our choices in life.
  • It can serve as a trigger for fruitful discussion about environmental protection and the often exploitative relationship between humans and nature, as well as the love that nature generously offers.
  • Encourages deep reflection on what happiness truly means, what holds true value in life, and how we define love and giving in our relationships.

Inspired by the book, you can:

  • Discuss: What did the tree give to the boy at each stage of his life? How did the tree feel each time it gave something? How did the boy feel? Was their relationship equal or was there an imbalance? Was the tree's love and sacrifice worth it?
  • Ask the child (or yourself): What would you do if you were the tree? What would you do if you were the boy? What does "giving" and "receiving" mean to you? When do you feel truly happy and fulfilled?
  • Create: Draw your own "giving tree" or the tree you would like to have as a friend, write a letter to the tree or the boy expressing your thoughts, or even plant your own little tree as a symbol of love, growth, and giving.

Read an excerpt:

"Once upon a time there was an Apple Tree... ...that loved a little child very much. Every day the little child would come... ...and gather its leaves... ...made wreaths and played king of the forest."

  • It is my little nephew's favorite... I disagree with the comment that the moral is about ingratitude and that it will have a bad impact on the child. Children have discernment; some stories (like this one) work in a reverse way—instead of showing you only the good, they also present the nature of evil so that you can criticize it and avoid it in your life. When I asked my child, he replied that what the child in the story did to the tree was not right. Children understand everything, do not underestimate them.

  • This book conveys the message "become spoiled, ungrateful, and drain your mother dry!". Just tragic and I am very sorry to see such good reviews. I understand the mothers who are emotionally charged by reading it, but the book and its message are intended for the children, not for themselves, so anyone who wants to buy it should think about whether this is the message they want to pass on to their child.
