Description

The present study analyzes key parameters of the monarchy in Greece. The fifty-year anniversary since the Metapolitefsi of '74 provides an excellent opportunity for a new "visit" to these significant issues. The institution of monarchy is closely intertwined with the history of the Greek state. In 1830, the monarchy, in its absolutist form, was granted to Greece as an antidote to the "anarchy" of the civil war that broke out after the assassination of Ioannis Kapodistrias. In the 19th century, in addition to being a symbol of national unity, the king of the Greeks also served as a link to the powerful states of Europe and ensured the country's ability to borrow funds from abroad.

The tangled web of successive constitutional changes unfolds through the Archives of the Royal Palaces, the Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, documents from the Foreign Office, the reports of the Greek and foreign press, as well as a multitude of personal testimonies. The sources highlight the special weight of England and the USA in the constitutional developments in Modern and Contemporary Greece.

In 1935, a military coup and the diplomatic intervention of England in favor of Eleftherios Venizelos were necessary for the acceptance of the return of George II to the throne. The non-parliamentary manner in which the restoration occurred made the king insecure and beholden to those who brought him back to Greece. This insecurity continued to haunt George II's successors after his return to Greece (1946). The Unyielding Struggle (1961-63) and the anti-monarchist statements of EDA (1964) intensified the anxieties of the Crown. In 1965, the fear of losing the throne led Constantine II into an irrational conflict with Georgios Papandreou and created the appropriate climate for the coup of April 21, 1967.
