Since the early 1980s, when the study of the history and theory of theater officially entered universities and research centers in the country - with significant delay - scientific research in this specific field has developed at very impressive rates.
Therefore, the conditions have matured to utilize its individual findings in the composition of a general history of modern Greek theater, even with a cautious consideration of the newly uncovered material for designing a comprehensive image. This work aims to pave the way in exactly this direction.
Taking into account the testimonies regarding theatrical activity in the Greek-speaking communities of the Eastern Mediterranean, from the years of the Cypriot Cycle of the Passion and the Cretan Theater to the movement of postmodernism in Athens in the last decades of the 20th century, the narrative attempts to highlight the most significant currents that have prevailed in the local art of the stage for a period exceeding half a millennium.
It also aims to map the starting points and milestones, the continuities and breaks that have contributed to the formation of a solid local artistic tradition. The goal is not just to catalog as many figures and events as possible that have participated in the relevant fermentation. The aim is to highlight and analyze the most important among them, and primarily to interpret and place them in a broader historical context as much as possible.
