The Constitutional Law Manual is the result of collaboration between Professors Vlachopoulos and Kontiadis. A primary prerequisite for its writing was the authors' many years of previous teaching and research experience.
Why do we need a Constitution? For approximately 25 years of university teaching in constitutional law, research, and legal practice, we have tried to follow established rules in writing this book. What should we learn about constitutional law? The answer is that there must be fundamental rules of state organization and protection of rights, which cannot be altered by any temporary parliamentary majority. Because the demarcation of state authority through the Constitution serves as the main bulwark against the temptation of arbitrariness involved in the exercise of any power. Because all laws must conform to the Constitution due to its superior formal power, resulting in constitutional law "illuminating" and being the necessary complement to all other branches of law. Because the Constitution is one of the strongest cohesive elements of modern societies.
This and many other issues are addressed in the current manuscript, which mainly aims to "initiate" students into the world of constitutional law. At the same time, it also targets the mature legal theory and practice, seeking to contribute to the scientific dialogue.
This manual covers the material of the Constitution of powers, namely the meaning, distinctions, and functions of the Constitution, its establishment, alteration, and interpretation, the sources of constitutional law, the fundamental principles of governance, the forms of control of the constitutionality of laws, the election, promotion, or appointment, the competences, the functioning, and the relationships among the direct organs of the state. The book also includes elements of political science and an extensive chapter on constitutional history.
