1833

Although the slave trade in the Mediterranean is declining, pirate raids continue to spread devastation. When the newlywed Frankio from Kimolos is captured by pirates, she is taken as a slave to Alexandria and her entire life is violently overturned. From within the shadows, she searches for the strength to return to the light, but the price is unbearable…

“Alzheimer’s? I never thought it could happen to me. I, who was always strong, capable, organizing, directing… How did I end up like this, Sophia?”

From the Cyclades to nineteenth-century Alexandria, from white slavery and the dark slave markets to the shocking revelations of the modern era, The Sonata of the Unseen Birds crosses seas and generations.

A story that praises the power of memory and music. A novel about the invisible threads that connect souls, even when everything seems lost. About the people who, like unseen birds, leave behind melodies that endure through time.

Genre: Historical, Social Novel.

Atmosphere: The book creates an atmosphere full of emotional shifts, from hope and love to loss and betrayal, set against the difficult times of post-war Greece.

In the book, you will encounter

  • The challenges of orphanhood and exile in difficult historical periods.
  • The consequences of poverty and social pressures on human decisions.
  • The search for truth and the confrontation of personal demons.

This book is for you if… you are looking for a novel with intense emotions and historical depth, exploring human resilience and the difficult choices faced in the adversities of life.

Why we loved it:

  • The story is inspired by true events, adding a special emotional intensity.
  • The heroine's decisions and the constant twists keep the interest undiminished.
  • It touches on timeless issues such as love, loss, and hope in a way that resonates with the reader.

Read an excerpt:

"Fate, they say, is an invisible thread that connects the lives of people. No one knows when and how it will appear, nor what it will bring with it. And if this thread becomes entangled with other threads, then people's lives become a tangle of joys, sorrows, loves, and betrayals. A tangle that is difficult to unravel.

How easy is it to believe that your life, your decisions, your actions are predetermined? How easy is it to accept that you are merely a puppet in the hands of a higher power? And if, in the end, we are all pawns on a chessboard, who is pulling the strings?
The heroine of our story, Theodora, did not believe in Fate. She believed in the power of will, in the value of effort, in the hope for a better tomorrow. But life had other plans for her. Plans that led her down dark paths, to painful decisions, to unimaginable actions."

Franciscos felt very uncomfortable, but he didn’t want to show it, and he bit his lips, awaiting a result he suspected would not be positive. Some time had passed since the end of this strange examination. Now Franciscos was looking at the diplomas above the desk, clenching his fingers, while the woman across from him was typing something on her computer. He noticed the way her well-groomed nails tapped on the keyboard. The sound they made was asymmetrically loud as she pressed the keys. Then, his gaze fell on her glasses. The angles where the upper part ended made her look somewhat strict. However, when she took them off and smiled at him kindly, her natural politeness returned. “I’ve prescribed you some vitamins, which you can start taking from tomorrow, and some tests, which also need to be done soon.” “What tests?” he asked, feeling his mouth go dry from anxiety.

This review is about the book: Collector's Edition

A very beautifully structured novel, with intense emotions and powerful imagery. The story may be “easy” to follow, but it hides many historical elements that make you think.
From 19th-century Kimolos and the slave markets of Alexandria to the present day and the pain of memory loss, Petroulakis composes a tender and moving narrative.
A story about music, memory, and the invisible threads that connect souls. Mr. Petroulakis consistently maintains value in his writing. He always has something meaningful to say.

  • Amazing book! I read it in two days. I was anxious, I couldn't wait! I also bought the book "The Shipwreck" by the same author and I intend to start it immediately. It has been classified among my favorite books. Beautiful images, everything came alive before me like a movie. So vivid and so real.
