Machiavelli, a great representative of the Renaissance, was "demonized" and his Prince was banned by the Vatican, which placed it on the Index of Forbidden Books. Likewise, Nikos Kazantzakis, translator of The Prince more than four centuries after its writing, faced both secular and ecclesiastical attacks, and his work The Last Temptation was also banned by the Vatican and listed in the Index.
Ultimately, in 1966, the Vatican abolished the Index of Forbidden Books, from which The Prince had earlier been removed. Despite the misinterpretation and attacks that both of these intellectual creators faced at various times, they are both regarded as classics, each in their own field.
Through this new edition, these two men, who were thinkers that challenged the established notions of their time and faced the consequences of their daring, meet again at the dawn of the 21st century. Kazantzakis, through The Prince, explores the timeless question of whether politics can combine effectiveness with ethics or if it is doomed to remain a realm where power outweighs moral principles.
Moreover, the book serves as a useful read for those interested in political thought and the philosophy of power. It is not simply a biography, but an invitation to deeper reflection on political reality and the nature of human governance.
