Dying, Kafka bequeathed a number of manuscripts to his friend Max Brod, with the instruction to destroy them. Brod ignored this instruction and thus "The Trial" was published a year later, in 1925. The novel, written probably in 1914, follows the persecution of Joseph K. in a bureaucratic labyrinth, from the morning when he wakes up and realizes that he has been unjustly arrested, to his execution by two men in black. A work of powerful and prophetic symbolism, it remains one of the most important and widely translated books of the twentieth century.
