Description

Apology of Socrates. The Apology is the only philosophical work of Plato that is not a dialogue. It is the defense speech delivered by Socrates to the judges. It is divided into three parts: the main apology, the section concerning the penalty to be imposed, and the address to the judges after the conviction. This work is a praise of the character of Socrates.

Theaetetus. The Theaetetus constitutes an important chapter of Platonic theory of knowledge. The dialogue deals with the subject of knowledge, without any reference to the ideas or the theory of recollection. It remains to this day one of the best introductions to the problem of knowledge. The main argument is as follows: It seems plausible to support that knowledge is perception, which appears to imply that the criterion of all things is subjective consciousness. This related doctrine is, rather paradoxically, presented by Plato as equivalent to the view that Heraclitus supported, that everything flows, and nothing remains constant. However, these views imply that there is no world of common perception; therefore, nothing certain can be said or conceived.
