The central character of the book was a real person who is presented under the conventional name Dimitris Lykoursiotis. He served in the British secret services and his personal story intertwines with the events, creating yet another “insider” document. The last chapter of the book, titled “The Descent of the One,” is an autobiographical text by Dimitris Lykoursiotis describing his odyssey after the collapse of the front.
The narration in “Without Limits” begins in May 1917, with the exile of King Constantine I and the dictatorship of Venizelos (1917-1920) with the arms of the French. In 1918, World War I ends. This is followed by the “Paris,” “Sèvres,” and other agreements, Greece’s campaign in Southern Russia (Ukraine) (1919), the landing in Smyrna, the 1920 elections, and the failed campaign in Ankara. The narration ends at Easter 1923, when the disaster has occurred.
Through the multitude of documents, the real causes of the Asia Minor Catastrophe are proven, as well as the anti-Greek stance of the “Allies,” and the deserters who abandoned their positions at the fronts.
A distinctive feature of the Trilogy is that the author, apart from revealing the historical truth, brings to life for the reader the events, the atmosphere, and the psychological portraits of the fateful leaders for our country, both Greek and foreign. The narration is structured following the poetics of Homeric storytelling, the narrative clarity, and the conciseness of high literature.
