The history of Classical Philology is of particular importance to our country. In 19th-century Greece, it was— alongside the two other major ancient studies, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History— a science of national self-awareness, with all the benefits and burdens that this entailed. Nevertheless, the related bibliography was limited.
The present collective volume, dedicated to the memory of a distinguished classical philologist, Aristoxenos D. Skiadas (1932-1994), aims to contribute to this scholarly effort. It includes fifteen chapters, each with its own distinct bibliography. The foundation of the volume was based on presentations from a conference held at the School of Philosophy in Athens in April 2024.
Regarding the authors, the majority are rightly classical philologists, but researchers from the fields of history, Modern Greek philology, comparative studies, and reception of the ancient world also participate. Specifically, the texts in the volume are authored by: Angela Gioti, Vangelis Karamanolakis, Nicoletta Kanavou, Ioanna Karamano, Eleni Bekiari, Theofanis Tsiabokalos, Michalis D. Konaris, Stavros Tsiitsiridis, Aikaterini Koroli, Marianna Thoma, Spyros I. Ragos, Amfilychos Papathomas, Margarita Sotiropoulou, Stephanos A. Tokos, Vasileios P. Vertoudakis.
Vasileios P. Vertoudakis is an Associate Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
