What is the relationship between medicine and the humanitarian sciences? From the perspective of a holistic approach to human beings, this collective volume demonstrates how integrating perspectives from different scientific fields such as history, philosophy, literature, linguistics, anthropology, law, performing and visual arts, etc., contributes to the quality of medical education and the optimal practice of medicine.
Specifically, skills such as communication and observation are enhanced, along with acceptance of diversity, ambivalence, and paradox; sensitivity to the language and rhetoric of patients to better understand their narratives; responding to the significant ethical and existential questions raised by illness and death; informing about issues in epistemology, especially related to technological developments; empowering professionalism and altruism with an emphasis on empathy; promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork; and preventing and addressing professional burnout.
The preface is dedicated to the anthropological negotiation of the body as collective memory (Mariella Papachristoforou). The first section discusses legal and ethical issues (Stefanos Geroulanos, Caroline Lantero, Georgios Boutlas, Athina Gritzala). The second focuses on topics that seem purely medical but, due to their social scope, require a holistic examination (Maria Syrrou, Petros Petrikis, Anna Liakopoulou, Georgia Angelis). The third presents new methodological tools developed by the medical sciences with the help of the humanities (Ourania Varsou, Theodora Tseleka, Kathleen Murphy). The fourth section explores how art and literature address illness (Maria Zoumparli, Despina Papastathi, Aggelia Mela).
Finally, in the afterword, Aris Sarafianos provides a unified perspective on multiple facets of the relationship between medicine and the humanitarian sciences.
The editors teach at the University of Ioannina. Specifically, at the Faculty of Medicine, the Rector Anna Batisstatu, Professor of Pathological Anatomy; Maria Syrrou, Professor of General Biology/Medical Genetics; and Theodora Tseleka, E.E.P. of English Language. At the Department of Music Studies, Maria Zoumparli is an Associate Professor of Cultural History with an emphasis on aesthetic theories.
