It is the last night of the year. A little girl wanders the streets, hatless and barefoot. No one wants to buy her matches. To keep warm, she starts lighting them, one by one, and each flame brings before the girl's eyes a joyful image: a delicious meal, a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, candles turning into stars, even the lovely face of her grandmother, who is no longer alive.
