Description

For the common people who listen to Greek music, the main protagonists are the performers of the songs, followed by the composers, and finally the lyricists.

However, the one who delivers the message to society through the songs is the lyricist, the composer "clothes" it with music, and the performer gives it substance, placing it in mouths and often in our hearts.

Greek song has influenced the psychosocial behavior of Greeks, has shaped our musical taste, while some iconic songs have united Hellenism in Greece and around the world, regardless of ideology, social class, or level of education. This can be observed during concerts when the audience joins their voices in a magical way, overshadowing the singer's voice.

One of the "unsung" heroes of Greek music is Ilias Filippou, who gave lyrics and "soul" to six thousand songs, which entertained, loved, and also helped Greeks cope with breakups and difficult situations. Ilias Filippou wrote his own history in Greek music, was loved by music enthusiasts, and continues his valuable work in an era where communication methods and circumstances are dramatically changing, making it difficult for Greek music.

Ilias Filippou: I write lyrics since I was a child ... shortly after I learned to write in primary school.

For me, the lyrics have always been ... a journey. A journey ... where reality and imagination ... coexist ideally, giving absolute and authentic freedom of thought and expression.

My lyrics always contain all the senses, on a different level ... where there are no boundaries or barriers.

Writing each lyric is like a journey, and I would say like a flight, and its completion is about landing, arriving at the destination, and ultimately closing a cycle. Its beginning, I would say, resembles takeoff, where the excitement for the new destination takes me every time, just like the first time — when I was a child — I penned my first little lyrics on pieces torn from paper napkins at the taverns I visited with my parents.

Since then ... every time I wrote a lyric ... I became a child again. That child who put his hands on his hips and smiled proudly at his achievements, who stretched his arms up ... who got angry ... who cried ... who laughed so genuinely ... from the depths of his soul.

The child who did not stay in the past ... could only look forward ... and dream. The child who would do anything ... to rebuild the world from scratch ... who would passionately ... and stubbornly pursue his dreams.

I was the child ... who lived the "now" with every sense ... with every cell ... observing everything ... every detail ... the important ... the insignificant ... and the difficult. And in the end ... I found everything in front of me.
