Description

The train enters Düsseldorf station. That's it. We have arrived, she thinks, and finds herself feeling nothing. Neither sadness nor joy. Only exhaustion, an emotional emptiness. Everything inside her has shrunk, dried up. A new life, she thinks, but she does not care how it will be, as long as she reunites with her family. That’s all.

The platform is crowded, chaos everywhere. Suddenly, as if waking from a sleep, anxiety grips her as she anxiously scans back and forth with her eyes to find her husband. She hasn’t seen him for three years, she has grown out of love, she is ashamed. They will have to start over again, she thinks. She doesn’t see him anywhere. Despair. What will I do, my God, if he doesn’t come? “Welcome, even if you are late.” He hugs her. She is startled. Her hands drop down, dry, slowly, hesitantly, raising to touch his back. Two bodies that will get to know each other again from the beginning. Two new people, two immigrants, awkwardly embracing on the platform.

Twenty short stories-memories that together compose the mosaic of the life and daily existence of a family and their environment, during the long period of their migration to Germany. Moments of separation, pain, longing, painful losses and harsh life, but also filled with small joys and unprecedented experiences lived by the family members as guest workers, in a world very different from the one they left behind.

Moments-fragments from the anti-dictatorial struggle in Germany and others from the emblematic fight of migrant workers during the "wilder Streik" for equal working conditions. In our days, darkened by nationalism and racism, the painful expression of the modern immigrant, the devastated refugee, bears the same pain, the same yearning for life.
