Description

The dictionary compiled by K.P. Kavafis includes 561 entries. The edition is supplemented by an introduction, a list of abbreviations, an extensive bibliography, a list of sources for the Kavafian dictionary, and appendices by the editor Michalis Pieres.

The Kavafis Dictionary is an extremely useful tool for the study of Kavafis's poetry and, more broadly, for the promotion of Kavafian studies in various fields. It addresses themes such as the poetic language sensitivity of the poet and his effort to enrich and perfect his linguistic instrument in Greek, as well as the study of the sources of several of his poems.

The reader of the Dictionary can also derive useful conclusions about the poet's reading preferences, both from the canon of Greek literature and from ephemeral texts, journalistic and otherwise.

In reality, it is a narrative of words and quotations, a patient journey into the language and dialects of the Greeks in which words and usages of words are trawled.

The advanced lexicographical experience of Kavafis (we know he used all the significant dictionaries of the Greek language of his time), as well as his linguistic theory in which he had meanwhile settled, is likely one of the reasons that led him to design his own dictionary in the way he did.

On the one hand, as a dictionary of quotations, and on the other hand, as a tool that would offer the user as many meanings or even subtle semantic shades of each word as possible. The edition brings to light rich material for the study of the multifaceted relationship between the poet and the Greek language, illuminating crucial aspects of his intellectual composition and the development of his poetic art.
