The advanced lexicographical experience of Kavafis (we know he used all the significant dictionaries of the Greek language of his time), as well as his linguistic theory in which he had meanwhile settled, is likely one of the reasons that led him to design his own dictionary in the way he did.

On the one hand, as a dictionary of quotations, and on the other hand, as a tool that would offer the user as many meanings or even subtle semantic shades of each word as possible.
