ALL OF MARIOS HAKKA'S WORK is human-centered and governed by the author's search for the "right," the honest, the essential material of human life, the drama of existence filtered through social conventions, contrasts, decaying ideologies – or not – and of course time.
The concept of time – past, present, future, moment, parallel lives – when not directly referenced, underlies the narratives of the characters. His one-act plays number four: Guilt, Search, The Keys, Under the Constellation of Gemini. All were likely written before 1971.
In the final years of his life, he dedicated himself to prose and poetry, in which one can discern his intense concern as well as a dialogue with death, his life, and his ontological approach to things.
Themes are drawn from biographical elements of his political and social activities as well as his personal life. Romantic and friendly relationships intertwine with political stances, revolutionary ideas, and guilt over the integrity and morality of the characters. All these create an existential universe where the characters in the works freely speak, move, and act.
He wrote his plays at a mature age. Many elements found in his prose and poetry have been incorporated into his theatrical characters. Even phrases. Some preceded his plays and are integrated into them, while others, probably, have been derived from his plays to be used later in other texts of his.
