Description

This collective work gathers some of the most recent research on the position and role of the Armed Forces and Security Services in modern Greece.

From the patriotism of the post-Civil War period to the democratized Metapolitefsi and the political behaviors of uniformed personnel in the 21st century, the book, written by the younger generation of historians and social scientists, traces the social, ideological, and cultural transformations of the institutions that embodied, more than any other, the concept of the State, its authority, abuses of power, transitions, and social image.

Contributions from historians and sociologists shed light on the journey from the intense hierarchical and authoritarian «uniformed societies» of the mid-20th century to the modern micro-communities of security and defense professionals, exploring issues of power, social mobility, gender, and political culture.

Combining rigorous documentation and theoretical boldness, the book emphasizes the need for new interpretations of the Greek experience of the 20th and 21st centuries. Specifically, by focusing on the (micro)societies of uniformed personnel, it investigates changes within the social body itself and deeper tensions between the State, Society, and Democracy.

The AUTHORS of the volume: Christos Aliprantis, Pothitos Varvaringos, Panagiotis Delis, Domna Koffa, Effie Lampropoulou, Panagos Panayiotopoulos, Dimitris Papadiamantis, Ianna Rotzioukou, Konstantinos Stratos, Yannis Tzirbas, Nikos Chatzopoulos.
