The way Elder Joseph the Hesychast handles language and expresses his words excludes any sweet sentimentality, although he himself is deeply sensitive and cares deeply for those suffering, as well as for his relatives. His speech does not follow any rules but flows naturally and effortlessly, even though he only completed the third grade of elementary school. Joseph walks a tightrope between words that are hard to find, in a language in which, in order to say what he means, he knows no boundaries. Only in a poetic way can the greatness of divine manifestation be conveyed, and Elder Joseph the Hesychast experiences and expresses this poetic expression through himself. His expression is not the result of a logical process or some rules he has embraced. It is neither colloquial nor formal modern Greek. Grammar and syntax are not the issue. It flows as from a source, and from its fluidity, one word carries and contains the other, giving expression to an unspoken, mysterious truth.
