Description

It all started the day David Bowie died and thousands of small worlds collapsed.

Adelfiko, a village in Serres, becomes the meeting place for two people desperately seeking a new beginning: Giorgos Melissinos, a surgeon from Thessaloniki, is trying to overcome the death of a patient, and Maro Abatzi, a newspaper proofreader and single mother, is forced to return to her hometown when her apartment in Athens is destroyed by fire. Could Adelfiko be hiding the solution to their anxieties, or will the secluded village test their faith in themselves? Just before turning forty, as the echoes of the ‘90s and their adolescence still linger, Maro and Melissinos will be forced to grow up, stand on their own, forget and remember.

A novel about place, memory, dreams, and the disappointments of an entire generation. An elegy for fraternal love, a tribute to the hidden kinships connecting those who shared the culture of an era.

“A truly contemporary (and timely) achievement, a writing feat, a thoroughly modern take on how novels should be written today.”
CHRISTOS PAPAGEORGIOU, diastixo.gr

“Tzanakari carefully orchestrates the mnemonic journeys of the characters, develops their relationships with their surroundings panoramically, does not rush to build their own relationship, and holds up facing mirrors when necessary to connect past and present times […]. Certainly, a well-considered and mature work.”
VANGELIS CHATZIVASILEIOU, To Vima

“A vivid, clear, well-written novel, profound and light at the same time, full of reflections on life and full of music and movies, it is definitely one of the most representative works of our times.”
MANOLIS PIMPLIS, I Epochi

“A novel about the complexity of family relationships, about the absences that haunt us, the open roads, the unfulfilled desires, the defining influence of music, poetry and other arts in shaping existence, and our instinctive reaction to the sweeping passage of time.”
NIKOS CHRYSOS, Literature

“One of the most distinctive and notable novels of contemporary output.”
CHRISTOS DANIIL, O Anagnostis
