The Black Monk could certainly be characterized as a novel-phenomenon in the global literary chronicles, as it has received numerous approaches and highly contradictory interpretations since the time of its writing until today.
This is not surprising at all, since Anton Chekhov addresses a timeless burning issue: the inability, or perhaps the refusal, of man to reconcile with gray mediocrity, with a dull existence.
By depicting a divided hero, a Mozart who is simultaneously Salieri, and crafting a controversial, dark vision that nonetheless embodies a large part of the collective consciousness, the author emphasizes the danger that arises when human will is paralyzed, when the individual, through a romantic view of reality, becomes consumed by chimerical pursuits.
With unique clarity, with his familiar sober gaze and with a poetic disposition, Chekhov captures real life and provides a clear answer to those who accuse him of "pessimism," refusing to acknowledge the truths he describes.
