The High Mountains was published in 1918 and is the first school reader in the Demotic language. The simple narration and vivid language of Zacharias Papantoniou make this book one of the most widely read and unsurpassed works of Greek literature. A group of children finish school and decide to go on vacation in the high mountains of Evrytania. There, they come into contact with mountain life, the beauties of nature, and create a community with roles and responsibilities for everyone. They learn to solve their problems and overcome the difficulties of life while becoming teachers for Lampros, the little shepherd boy who thirsts for knowledge.
