It was June 2014, the end of the second year of the Pilot Program, and specifically the day of the literature exam, when I entered to explain the topics in class B1. Before I started speaking, a student spontaneously said, “Well, ma’am, what are we going to write? We haven't had a lesson all year!” In an instant, I probably changed many colors. Thoughts flooded my mind, like “What will the supervising colleague think who is listening?” However, very quickly, fortunately, I found my composure, put my conservative self in place and, turning to the student with a smile, I said, “I’m very glad, Yiannis, that you see it this way!”
From 2002 to 2007, the Program for Educating Muslim Children produced educational materials for the three grades of middle school. These materials accompanied teaching methods that overturn traditional lecturing, utilizing group teaching and the project method. In 2012, the Pilot Program began, implementing the materials in a limited number of schools in Thrace for three years.
This book gives the floor to the educators who implemented the Pilot Program in literature lessons. Their lessons were based on teaching thematic and genre units and reading entire books (rather than excerpted texts), with the ultimate goal of engaging students and enabling them to produce their own narratives. The educators share their experiences from participating in the Program, focus on the students and their reactions, recount specific episodes from their lessons, document their expectations, insecurities, and anxieties, and present the results of their work.
There is no similar precedent in Greek literature: giving the floor to educators to present their work in the classroom through experiential methods. Furthermore, these stories transcend the framework of a program's implementation as they concern a broader audience, beyond the educational community: they highlight the "imperfections" of the modern educational system and showcase a new teaching approach, a different classroom that students love because it provides the opportunity for both them and their teachers to create, express themselves, and grow.
