In late 1944, under mysterious circumstances, ambitious writer and second-year Columbia University student Jack Kerouac lost a manuscript of novella length titled "The Haunted Life." Seventy years after it was written, this manuscript is published for the first time (and in Greek).
Set against the backdrop of the quiet town of Galloway in New England, a fictional version of Kerouac's hometown, Lowell, Massachusetts, "The Haunted Life" is the coming-of-age story of Peter Martin, a track star in college who is determined to spend one last carefree summer. Instead, he is constantly haunted by what awaits him: a society still grappling with the aftermath of the Great Depression, and the impending entry of the United States into World War II. When his two best friends—characters based on two of Kerouac's childhood friends, Sebastian Sambras and Billy Chandler, both of whom had recently been killed in the war—begin to plan their escape from Galloway, Peter realizes that he will soon have to make choices about his future. As he reflects on the conflicting influences of his youth, from his working-class, populist father to his restless idealist friends, Peter struggles to determine what may lead him to a mentally authentic life.
