A work written in 1753, among the many almost identical ones that Goldoni wrote during that time. The influence of Commedia dell'Arte on the works of this period is evident, as it even uses its names (Pantalone, Brighella, etc.).
However, we already observe an effort by the author to differentiate himself from the improvised comedies of the Renaissance. With this work, he reacts against the predetermined form of comedy without comic inventiveness, and introduces a new tactic, the "logic and morality of everyday life."
Maids and servants speak while avoiding pre-planned improvisations, naive question-and-answer exchanges, and stylized comic expressions. In their place, Goldoni writes dialogues with social relevance that respond to the reality of the time.
