The novel by Alexandre Dumas (the son) was published for the first time in 1848 and a few years later was adapted for the theatre. It was staged in 1852, achieving great success and marking the beginning of the author's theatrical career.
The inspiration for Dumas's heroine, Marguerite Gautier, and her tragic story was Marie Duplessis, one of the most famous courtesans of Paris, who died in 1847 at the young age of twenty-three from tuberculosis, deeply in debt from her lavish lifestyle. The author himself had romantic relationships with her, which he soon ended.
Dumas's heroine is heart-wrenching; despite her sinful past, she is willing to sacrifice everything for her love for Armand, but their love will be crushed against the rocks of social conventions.
La Dame aux Camélias inspired Verdi's La Traviata and has been adapted for film in over twenty countries. Legendary actresses such as Sarah Bernhardt and Greta Garbo, among many others, embodied the role of Marguerite Gautier on screen.
Garbo's performance, although not awarded an Oscar, is considered legendary, while George Cukor's film titled Camille was included in the list of the greatest romantic films of all time by the American Film Institute.
