How did the Asia Minor Campaign arise? What was Greece's policy in Asia Minor before World War I? What is the identity of the Asia Minor Greek community? Why was Greece defeated in Asia Minor? Who was to blame? Was the electoral slogan "Oikade" ever mentioned? These are some of the questions this study attempts to answer.
Based on historical documentation, it is inferred that Asia Minor "lagged" in becoming an object of irredentist claims by the Greek state. In fact, the interior of Anatolia, where cohesive Greek (Turkophone) populations lived, was terra incognita for Hellenism.
Greek interest in Asia Minor gradually began in 1891 with the founding of the Asia Minor Association "The East" in Athens. The Asia Minor issue dynamically entered the center of Greek political life in 1915. A turning point was the anti-Greek persecution unleashed by the Young Turks' government in 1914.
The decision by Eleftherios Venizelos to land troops in Smyrna was the result of strong social pressures from the mass of 150,000 Asia Minor refugees, who had then flooded Greece, as well as political pressures from the opposition in Parliament. Greece's campaign in Asia Minor aimed objectively at the repatriation of the victims of the first wave of refugees and the safeguarding of their survival in their homelands under the aegis of Greek national sovereignty.
