Patronage, nepotism, lack of meritocracy, unreliability, profit-seeking, clientelism, trade unionism, partisanship of the state, and the nationalization of the ruling party, the dominance of short-term interests over long-term ones, as well as organized special interests over disorganized broad and general ones, the paralyzing effect of the fear of political cost, political instability that produces legal, economic, and investment insecurity... These are considered by Professor Diamantopoulos as the main pathogenic sources of our political system, which contaminate the entirety of the social and economic life of the country.

He therefore wonders: Could institutions such as the Constitutional Court, a relatively stable Parliament, the Senate as a brake on the impulsive expressions of popular sovereignty, or a Presidency with special additional powers contribute to limiting the aforementioned pathologies, and under what conditions? Furthermore: What improvement could be expected from changing the way the leadership of the judiciary is appointed and the electoral system for MPs? From a different logic in the composition of the Cabinet? Or even from transitioning to a presidential democracy?

A book that its author did not intend to be accusatory but diagnostic, with the ultimate ambition of making some small contribution to limiting the inherent ailments of our political system.
