In these works, we encounter a surrealist Lorca, heavily influenced by Freud's theories and the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century; a Lorca who is notably distant from the chronologically later and clearly better-known realistic ethnographic themes of his rural dramas: Blood Wedding (1933), Yerma (1934), and The House of Bernarda Alba (1936).

In Lorca's When Five Years Pass, we do not find the hot air and the mourning figures of Andalusian tragedy, but many of his theatrical constants are present, such as poetic language or the tragic nature of the characters and their inability to experience, even fleetingly, happiness.
