This book has already become a reference work for many subsequent scientific studies due to its scientific validity and strong documentation based on unpublished archival sources from Greece, Bulgaria, America, Germany, and Britain, across the entirety of available literature, as well as dozens of oral testimonies from living protagonists and witnesses of the events. Therefore, it was deemed necessary to reissue it in a revised form.
The central theme of the book is the documentation and interpretation of the events concerning the armed actions of Greek resistance groups against the Bulgarian occupation from 1941 to 1944 in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, which remains relatively unknown to the general public. We follow the process of forming initially independent and unrelated armed groups into a resistance movement by the EAM/ELAS, which in the autumn of 1943 is strengthened by the Allied General Headquarters in the Middle East.
Next, an attempt is made to present the events and interpret the conflict between ELAS and the independent groups in the area, which are primarily composed of Turkish-speaking Pontians. The conflict will lead to the formation of a separate resistance organization by the so-called nationalist guerrillas under the leadership of Antonis Fostiridis, better known as Anton-tsaous. The nationalist guerrillas will extract British Colonel Miller, Head of the Allied Military Mission, from ELAS, offering their services to the Allied General Headquarters in the Middle East.
Thus, we have the phenomenon of two parallel rival organizations in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The broader political and military developments are also examined to better illuminate the choices of the protagonists (nationalists, ELAS, and the British) at the local level. Additionally, the international developments and diplomatic processes that led to the end of the Occupation and the definitive withdrawal of Bulgarian troops from Greek territories are explored.
In this sense, the present book also serves as a dissertation that transcends local interest and pertains to the overall study and interpretation of the phenomenon of National Resistance.
