Description & Specifications

The Gospels move on the fringes of literary norm in terms of structure, language, and content, which created the uniqueness of the orators of the early Christian centuries. If judged by themselves, they are texts with evident elements of oral speech, written in the living language of the time and containing content that traced the course of humanity from the grave to life and resurrection.

During the Hellenistic and Greco-Roman times, in the squares, gymnasiums, and theaters of the cities, apart from the "barking" of the Cynics, the "rhetorical declamations" of the orators and sophists were also echoing. The crowds that paid attention to the unshaven Cynic philosophers, because they understood their concise and versatile speech, their social criticism, and the consistency of their moral teaching and life, were also present at the impressive public speeches of the orators.

However, it is evident that the recipients determine the content and partly the form of Christian preaching. A common element is the joyful news of the resurrection of the dead and the call to repentance. The Jews knew the true God from the visions of the righteous of Israel, while the Gentiles sought the unknown God. Therefore, the approach is different.

The first Christian sermon that was preserved is a clear example of the evolution of the literary genre of the Gospel into the genre of the sermon, with which the first generation after the apostles formulated their preaching.
