This collective publication, issued in collaboration with the Department of History of the Ionian University, is a contribution to the history of the Greek Enlightenment and the Revolution, adhering to a constant: a realistic relationship with this critical period of our historical reality, without hiding our admiration for all those who fought.
1821 is the act of creating the Greek national state. It is both Greek and European history, just as the Greek Enlightenment has been since its inception, about eighty years earlier. The success of the Greek Revolution, like that of any other, cannot be understood in military terms and individual heroisms, as is often done through a populist distortion of history.
The victory of the Greeks against a far stronger enemy is primarily due to particularly clever political strategies that were developed through intense, even civil conflicts among the Greeks. The victorious outcome of the Revolution is also due to the high risk taken by many members of various leadership groups of the Greek populations.
