Description

The discourse of Greek media, a multiplied echo of international news agencies or an authentic product of the domestic community of professional journalists and contributing writers who popularize the discourse of sciences, technology, and theoretical criticism, largely constitutes an uncharted territory.

Equally unknown, as to its historical vector and linguistic/genre composition, is the protean discourse of mass communication (advertising, documentaries, television series, comics, etc.). Besides articles that examine the linguistic landscape or the textual identity of mediated communication and information genres – it is indeed a fact that they have been encouragingly increasing in recent years – there are few extensive studies or collective attempts at analyzing the discourse of Greek media.

This volume aspires to fill essential gaps in the study of contemporary Greek journalism and advertising. It gathers 19 articles that explore the contextual, cultural, and ideological framework, organizational patterns, discourse strategies, and style of many forms of print and television journalism.

In some cases, the focus of the analysis is not the genre of discourse but the linguistic representations of phenomena closely related to media discourse, such as linguistic ideologies, the use of sources, or the management of the internet as a new channel of communication and information. Additionally, linguistic peculiarities and genres of advertising discourse are studied.

Finally, we hope to illuminate sufficiently the identity of the 'Greek example': its inevitable alignment with professional traditions of metropolitan West – recently also with the 'universality' of the global web – as well as its national and cultural individuality.
