During the few months period, from July 1974 to almost the end of 1975, Greece experienced a series of dramatic changes that successfully secured the country's transition from a dictatorial regime to a parliamentary constitutional democracy, which in the Greek case was called the Metapolitefsi. And if since then, much ink has been spilled about when the Metapolitefsi "ends", the questions about the processes of this brief transition remain unanswered and many aspects of the painful birth of the democratic regime remain obscure.
The thirteen texts of this volume attempt to shed light on aspects of this "brief" Metapolitefsi, from the arrival of Konstantinos Karamanlis to the conviction of the perpetrators of the Polytechnic uprising. Based on recent research, they outline this transitional process; a process of managing the post-civil war legacies and at the same time satisfying the expectations raised by the anti-dictatorial struggle. The return of the army to the barracks after the tragedy of Cyprus, the convictions of the perpetrators of the coup, the reshaping of political life with the recognition of the Communist Party, the abolition of the monarchy and the creation of new political parties, Greece's relations with other European countries, the disengagement are some of the topics studied by historians and political scientists, highlighting the ongoing tension between continuities and ruptures, which, however, led to a new distinct period for Greek society.
