As is known, the exhibition titled "The Gold of the Macedonians" succeeded the exhibition of the Vergina find in 1998 (inaugurated on 13.6.1998) at the exhibition space on the first floor of the New Wing of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.
For the past few years, the Vergina find has been exhibited – overall, almost following the recent supplementary re-exhibition that was inaugurated in the autumn of 2003 – in the museum space that includes the royal tombs of Vergina.
The subsequent exhibition at the A.M.Th. proved that, with the passage of some time, it exhibited comparable visitor numbers since it showcased collections or individual artifacts of the same era, as well as of similar artistic and historical value.
That exhibition, under the direction of the then Minister of Culture Mr. Evangelos Venizelos, was designed and "set up" in a minimal amount of time (two months) following the transfer of the Vergina find, under my supervision, and a working group that included the archaeologists Dr. Elizabeth Tsigarida, a specialist in gold, Dr. Despoina Ignatiadou, a specialist in glassmaking and microcrafting, and archaeologist Dr. Dimitra Aktseli.
The architectural design and oversight of the execution was handled by architect Ms. Alkmene Paka. A brief guide without entries has been published for this exhibition ("The Gold of the Macedonians", T.A.P.. 2000, with texts by the archaeologists Ms. Tsigarida and Ms. Ignatiadou).
This exhibition remains open to this day, as these lines are being written, with visitor numbers comparable to those of the immediate past, when the general reconstruction of the A.M.Th. had not yet begun.
With the completion of the first phase of the reconstruction, it was moved, augmented, from the area of the New Wing to the core of the reconstructed building ("small P"), so that during the Olympic Games in August 2004, another exhibition could operate in Thessaloniki, which had been designated as an Olympic City (inaugurated on July 28, 2004, by the then Deputy Minister of Culture Mr. Petros Tatoulis).
The other was the exhibition "Ancient Farmhouses on Modern Roads" in the "Cryptic Arcade" of the Ancient Agora of Thessaloniki, for which the T.A.P. has already published (2003) a guide in Greek and English.
The exhibition has been augmented with the presentation of the entirety of the finds from four tombs, two from the cemetery of Sindos and two from the cemetery of Derveni, featuring a significant new collection of primarily gold jewelry from the cemeteries of Central Macedonia, and finally, the renewed presentation of the exhibition (inaugurated on 4.4.1998) "The Derveni Papyrus".
