Hippocratic Surgery is, of course, only a small part of what the term encompasses in modern medical science: Hippocratic surgery involves the bones of the human body, not its soft tissues.
Derived from the word "hand" and the verb "to work," the word "surgery" - ἐχειρουργία (cheirourgía) in Ionic - denoted tasks that the doctor primarily carried out with the help of his hands. In ancient times, the practitioner corresponding most closely to today's chiropractor seems to have been the manual therapist.
Nevertheless, Hippocratic surgery remains one of the most important chapters in the global history of the art of healing. This is also why the surgical works of the Hippocratic collection have attracted particular interest from scholars studying this collection.
