PLA (polylactic acid) is one of the oldest and most commonly used materials in the 3D printing community, mainly due to its advantages as a versatile and environmentally friendly thermoplastic. It is organic and biodegradable, and can easily be combined with other components to influence its final properties, such as flexibility and metallic appearance.
The color of Real PLA is translucent white and has a printing temperature between 195 - 205 degrees (depending on hot end characteristics). Dark colors may require a few extra degrees due to the coloring process. The filament should extrude smoothly and appear slightly glossy. PLA is denser and more durable than ABS, but it is more susceptible to cracking under high loads.
PLA can print well on an unheated surface using Blue Painters tape or Kapton. The use of sprays like 3DLAC on a glass bed is recommended for added convenience. A low bed temperature between 50 - 60 degrees reduces the chances of warping and makes it easier to remove the final print once the surface has cooled.
