The PLA filament is available in many shades, with different types available under the Real brand. PLA (polylactic acid) is one of the oldest and most widely used materials in the 3D printing community, mainly due to its advantages as a versatile and environmentally friendly thermoplastic. It is organic and biodegradable and can easily be combined with other components to affect its final properties, such as flexibility and metallic texture.
The colorless form of Real PLA has a transparent off-white shade and has a printing temperature between 195 - 205 degrees (depending on the characteristics of the hot end). The darker shades of Real may require a few extra degrees of temperature due to the coloring process. The filament should extrude smoothly and appear slightly shiny. PLA is denser and more durable than ABS, but it is more brittle and prone to cracking under high forces.
It is also less resistant to external factors (UV light and water) compared to other common thermoplastics (see Nylon, ABS, and PETG). PLA can print well on an unheated surface using Blue Painters tape or Kapton tape, as well as most 3D printing adhesives. For easy and practical use, it is recommended to use sprays like 3DLAC on a glass bed. A low bed temperature between 50 - 60 degrees further reduces the chance of warping and makes the removal of the final print easier once the printing surface has cooled down.
