The Body of Crime is an anthology of thirteen classic detective stories, where landmark texts of the genre alternate with lesser-known works, always keeping in mind the demand for exceptional literary quality.
Without attempting to provide an exhaustive presentation of the detective genre in its countless variations, the anthology offers a representative image of it, from its precursor forms and establishment to the 1920s.
First comes a story by Hawthorne, which can be considered a precursor of the genre, and the anthology continues with a lesser-known story by Poe, a writer who set the main lines of detective narration. It follows stories by great authors who cultivated the genre in an indirect way, such as Dickens, an excellent connoisseur of the underworld, Wilkie Collins, Jack London, Oscar Wilde, and Mark Twain, all combining it with a subtle and pleasant humor.
Of course, it also includes one of Conan Doyle's famous stories featuring his undisputed hero, Sherlock Holmes, but it does not overlook lesser-known tales, such as those of Baroness Orczy or Richard Austin Freeman, authors who exclusively dedicated themselves to detective literature and enjoyed great success and popularity in their time.
It also includes a story featuring Arsène Lupin, the gentleman burglar, created by the Frenchman Maurice Leblanc, as well as a story by American Jack Futrell, starring Professor Van Dusen, who is known by the nickname "The Thinking Machine." The collection concludes with one of Chesterton's stories featuring his famous hero Father Brown, who always prefers to liberate his petty criminal rather than turn him over to the authorities for punishment.
The edition is accompanied by a thorough introduction by JUAN ANTONIO MOLINA FOIX, which searches for the roots of detective narration in biblical texts, in Oedipus, or in One Thousand and One Nights, and analyzes the formation and establishment of the genre during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
