Description

Description

The volume includes 44 detailed studies by archaeologists from Greece and abroad, presented at the international Archaeological Conference on "The Ceramics of the Classical Period in the Northern Aegean and its Region (480-323/300 BC)." This meeting took place from May 17 to 20, 2017, in Thessaloniki and was organized in cooperation with the Archaeology Sector of the History and Archaeology Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Department of Language, Literature, and Culture of the Black Sea Countries of Democritus University of Thrace.

The systematic investigation of the ceramic assemblages from the classical period, as well as many recent and earlier excavations, has allowed for new synthetic approaches to the archaeological data. The aim was to highlight various issues related to local ceramic workshops, imports of ceramics, construction techniques and uses, iconography, trade, and the distribution of vessels within a broad geographical context. The sites of classical ceramics include a wide range of archaeological locations - such as sanctuaries, workshops, residential, and burial complexes - along the coasts and hinterlands of northern Greece, on islands of the northeastern Aegean, and in other neighboring areas. Regarding the categories of vessels, during the classical years, there is a notable diversity in terms of shapes, decoration, and multiple uses. Local production of pottery becomes increasingly discernible, partly following the strong pre-existing ceramic tradition and partly adopting new shapes and techniques from other areas, mainly from Attica.
