No one would be far from the truth if they claimed that political theology and liberation theology are usually absent from orthodox theological discourse, just as, to a large extent, biblical theology, and specifically the biblical background of liberation theology, is the other major absence in orthodox theology, which tends to define itself as exclusively "patristic" and "traditional."
On the other hand, with rare exceptions, liberation theology, both in its European and Latin American versions, essentially ignores the patristic contribution to the issues being discussed and the interest that many related patristic texts present, in which we find an early radical critique of wealth, social injustice, and exploitation, even of property, as well as a vigorous advocacy not only for charity and almsgiving, but also for social mobilization and practical solidarity with the weak, an advocacy with christological references and prerequisites, which elevates the mystery of the brother, if not alongside the mystery of Theology, at least to the point of being a prerequisite for entry into the Kingdom.
This volume from the Academy of Theological Studies, in collaboration with other theological and academic bodies, endeavors to examine the above topics together (biblical theology of liberation, patristic theology, and the ambiguities of modernity).
