Description

“The Communist Manifesto” is the most important revolutionary call ever written. Over the 150 years since the publication of this small pamphlet, which is almost certain to have exerted the greatest influence as a political text after the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen” of the French Revolution, the world has been repeatedly shaken by those who attempted to put its writings into practice.

Today, at the turn of the millennium, even after the end of Soviet communism and the decline of Marxist parties and movements in many parts of the world, the “Manifesto” is not only a classic Marxist text, it is a classic political text.

The aim of this modern edition, as noted in the astute introduction that enriches this volume by distinguished English historian Eric Hobsbawm, “is not so much to make the text of this remarkable masterpiece available, much less to engage in the doctrinal disputes of the century about the ‘correct’ interpretation of this foundational document of Marxism. It is simply to remind us that on the eve of the 21st century the ‘Manifesto’ still has much to say to the world.”

"If one wants to understand the great mystery of life, they must study all its aspects, not just the narrow doctrinal view of the Jedi."

Keeping in mind the above excerpt from Palpatine in Episode 3 of Star Wars, I started reading the famous manifesto with an open mind, and although I don't really belong to the political sphere it represents, I can't say that I didn't find value and truth in some of the ideas and proposals mentioned here. One should read it and decide for themselves, judging with their ethics, philosophy, and historical knowledge whether the message of the book is "good" or "bad".

What I can safely say without political prejudice, though, is that this is not a very pleasant, easy, or particularly timeless book. There are points where we are bombarded with complex terms of class, economic, and social structure and relationships that challenge my non-humanities-oriented brain. There are also many references to events, political parties, or situations of the time the book was written that would confuse anyone without the necessary knowledge.

I believe that a modern abbreviation or commentary of the book that provides context elsewhere would be preferable to reading it in its entirety.

I received this particular book as a gift 3 years ago, and I can confidently say that I have not received a better one. Simple, understandable, and timeless. It helps you delve into the idea of Marxism despite its small size, and definitely gives you a new perspective on the issues of modern socio-economic organization
