"Dune", the science fiction masterpiece by Frank Herbert from 1965, is a literary landmark, recognized as the best-selling science fiction book worldwide and awarded the top Nebula and Hugo prizes. Arthur Clarke compared it only to "The Lord of the Rings" and the BBC included it among the 100 books that changed the world. The universe of the desert planet Arrakis continues to inspire, having led to numerous books, films, and television series.
The planet Arrakis, the desert planet, is the only place in the universe where there are reserves of the spice melange, the most valuable substance in the Empire. The melange extends life, expands human consciousness, and allows the Spacers of the Spacing Guild to fold space, thus providing humanity the ability to travel to the stars.
In this strange world, known as Dune, the story of the young Paul Atreides unfolds masterfully, who as Muad'Dib will give flesh and blood to humanity's most ambitious dream. Combining breakneck action and mysticism, ecological vision and political intrigue, Frank Herbert's classic work, which has won the top Hugo and Nebula awards, remains ever relevant and has rightly been described as the greatest epic of science fiction.
