Description

Description

In a tranquil retirement village in the British countryside, a motley crew gathers every Thursday to delve into old files of unsolved murders. However, when a brutal murder occurs close by, the Thursday Murder Club faces a real case.

Not just yellowed, smudged pages from a typewriter of another era; a genuine case, a real corpse, and, somewhere out in the world, a real murderer. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron may be nearing eighty, but their hearts are still in the game.

Will this unconventional yet highly intelligent gang manage to catch the killer before it's too late?

In a tranquil retirement village in the British countryside, a motley crew gathers every Thursday to delve into old files of unsolved murders. But when a brutal killing occurs just a stone's throw away, the Thursday Murder Club faces a real-life case.

Not just yellowed, smudged typewriter pages from another era; a real case, a real corpse, and, somewhere out there, a real killer. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron may be nearing eighty, but they still have the heart for it. Will this unorthodox yet brilliant gang manage to catch the killer before it's too late?

So, let’s start with Elizabeth, shall we? And let’s see where that takes us. I knew who she was, of course—everyone here knows Elizabeth. She has one of the three-bedroom apartments in the Larkin Building. The corner one, with the wooden veranda, isn’t that right? Also, once, in a trivia game, I was on the same team as Stephen, who, for a variety of reasons, is Elizabeth’s third husband. I had come down for lunch—it must have been two or three months ago—and it must have been a Monday, because the menu had meat pie. Elizabeth said that, although she was interrupting my meal, she wanted to ask me something about knife wounds, if it wasn’t too much trouble. I said, “Not at all, of course, please,” or something like that. I’m not going to remember everything that was said or happened in detail, I’d better make that clear from the start. So she opened a yellow folder, and I saw some typewritten pages, and the edges of some cards that looked like old photographs. And then she got straight to the point.

This review is about the book: The Devil Dies Last

Nice plot, typical of this particular series which I liked a lot. However, in this book, it includes some philosophical chapters about the meaning of life that change the style of the text and make it heavier. I would have preferred if it had stayed lighter like the previous ones, since these books are meant to be read for relaxation, not for contemplation.

Also, the fact that in the translations we often see the words 'molatafta' and 'prosoras' (and in the previous books as well) is funny. They are not words used in everyday speech and they stand out. At first, they even annoyed me, "why do they talk like that?". Then I decided that since the protagonists are old, the narrator must be old too, so it's in his character and I calmed down

I love crime and mystery books, but this one was really exhausting to indifferent. I thought maybe it's because of the translation, but I don't think so... Many characters, too much confusion, not easy to read at all, and you often feel like the flow is lost.
