This week they studied the unsolved case of a newsagent from Hastings, who killed a burglar with a bow and arrow. He was arrested, but then the media got involved, and public opinion was that the man should have the right to defend his own shop with a bow and arrow, for God’s sake. And he was released, proud and unbowed.
A month or so later, the police discovered that the burglar was the boyfriend of the newsagent’s daughter, and that the newsagent had a serious criminal record for grievous bodily harm, but by that point everyone had moved on. We’re talking about 1975, after all. No CCTV, and no one to stir up any reactions.

Nice plot, typical of this particular series which I liked a lot. However, in this book, it includes some philosophical chapters about the meaning of life that change the style of the text and make it heavier. I would have preferred if it had stayed lighter like the previous ones, since these books are meant to be read for relaxation, not for contemplation.
Also, the fact that in the translations we often see the words 'molatafta' and 'prosoras' (and in the previous books as well) is funny. They are not words used in everyday speech and they stand out. At first, they even annoyed me, "why do they talk like that?". Then I decided that since the protagonists are old, the narrator must be old too, so it's in his character and I calmed down

I love crime and mystery books, but this one was really exhausting to indifferent. I thought maybe it's because of the translation, but I don't think so... Many characters, too much confusion, not easy to read at all, and you often feel like the flow is lost.

Στην αρχή με εκνεύρισαν κιόλας, "γιατί μιλάνε έτσι;". Μετά αποφάσισα ότι αφού οι πρωταγωνιστές είναι γέροι, θα είναι και ο αφηγητής γέρος οπότε είναι μέσα στο χαρακτήρα του και ηρέμησα

Everything really begins when a landowner connected to the development plans around the retirement village is murdered—and soon another murder complicates things further.
The series of scattered clues, seemingly innocent photographs, secrets from the past, and characters with unexpected sides create a puzzle that you can't see all at once from the start.
What won me over especially is the balance between the mystery and the human side—it's not just "who did it," but "who are these people," "what are they afraid of," "what values do they still keep alive." And the atmosphere is cosy, pleasant, with moments that make you laugh, but also touching ones.
As for the movie (2025 production, directed by Chris Columbus, starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie)—I loved it! The feeling of the book is there, the earthy emotions of the characters, the way it handles the themes of age and community, all of that comes across on screen.
Especially the chemistry between the actors, the atmosphere, the small moments where you see smiles and emotion, make the movie stand out.
If you like mystery books/movies that don't just rely on twists but also on characters, warmth, and a friendly "closed circle" that seems calm but hides secrets, then The Thursday Murder Club, both as a book and as a movie, will be unforgettable for you.

Όλα ξεκινούν πραγματικά όταν ένας οικοπεδούχος που είναι συνδεδεμένος με τα σχέδια ανάπτυξης γύρω από το retirement village δολοφονείται — και σύντομα άλλη δολοφονία έρχεται να περιπλέξει τα πράγματα.
Η σειρά από σκόρπιες ενδείξεις, φωτογραφίες που μοιάζουν αθώες, μυστικά από το παρελθόν και χαρακτήρες με απροσδόκητες πλευρές φτιάχνουν ένα παζλ που δεν το βλέπεις όλο από την αρχή.
Αυτό που με κέρδισε ιδιαίτερα είναι η ισορροπία μεταξύ του μυστηρίου και της ανθρώπινης πλευράς — δεν είναι απλά “ποιος το έκανε”, αλλά “ποιοι είναι αυτοί οι άνθρωποι”, “τι φοβούνται”, “τι αξίες κρατούν ακόμα ζωντανές”. Η αίσθηση του βιβλίου είναι εκεί, τα γήινα συναισθήματα των χαρακτήρων, ο τρόπος που χειρίζεται το θέμα της ηλικίας και της κοινότητας, όλα αυτά περνάνε στην οθόνη.
Ειδικα η χημεία μεταξύ των ηθοποιών, η ατμόσφαιρα, οι μικρές στιγμές όπου βλέπεις χαμόγελα και συναίσθημα, κάνουν την ταινία να ξεχωρίζει.
Αν σου αρέσουν βιβλία/ταινίες μυστηρίου που δεν βασίζονται μόνο στις ανατροπές αλλά και στους χαρακτήρες, στη ζεστασιά και σε ένα φιλικό “κλειστό κύκλο” που ενώ φαίνεται ήρεμος, κρύβει μυστικά τότε The Thursday Murder Club τόσο ως βιβλίο όσο και ως ταινία θα σου μείνει αξέχαστο.
I love crime and mystery books, but this one was really exhausting to indifferent. I thought maybe it's because of the translation, but I don't think so... Many characters, too much confusion, not easy to read at all, and you often feel like the flow is lost.
Λατρεύω τα βιβλία με εγκλήματα και μυστήριο,αλλά τούτο δω ήταν πραγματικά κουραστικό έως αδιάφορο.Ειπα μήπως οφείλεται στην μετάφραση,αλλά δεν νομίζω...Πολλά πρόσωπα,πολύ ανακάτεμα,καθόλου εύκολο να διαβαστεί και νιώθεις πολλές φορές ότι χάνεται η ροή.
