This book is a collective publication, marking the 50th anniversary of the Cypriot Republic, featuring contributions from 34 distinguished university professors and authors with research works on the subject at hand.
It covers the historical conditions that led to the establishment of the Cypriot Republic and the specific form that its unique constitution took, the conflicting path followed by the Greek and Turkish communities from the early years of the Republic, the prolonged crisis of the Cyprus issue, and the multiple -yet fruitless- attempts at resolution.
It also explores the creation and evolution of free political life after the establishment of the Cypriot Republic, the development of the print and electronic media, language policy and political culture within the framework of identity seeking, social and economic changes, and Cyprus's transition from an agrarian to an urban society, from an underdeveloped agricultural economy to today's developed economy of services and information.
Finally, the book addresses key areas of cultural development during the fifty-year journey of the Cypriot Republic, with references (for purely practical reasons) primarily to the Greek community. It records significant achievements in literary production and the new trends and expressive forms in the field of visual arts, as well as the development of education, highlighted by the establishment of the University of Cyprus.
